TMJ Treatment In Cornelius, NC And the Huntersville, NC Area

Do Not Let TMJ or Bruxism Cause You Chronic Pain

Problems with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can arise without warning and last from days to years without treatment. Although there are many factors that are yet unknown about this condition, the main contributors to TMJ disorder (TMD) are injury to the jaw, bruxism, teeth clenching, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. If you are suffering from TMD, contact White and Haines Advanced Dentistry to discuss treatment options with our doctors.

Are You Suffering From TMJ?

The joint that connects your jaw and skull can create more than just jaw pain. When malfunctioning, it can result in a host of vague symptoms that can easily be attributed to other conditions. Signs of TMJ may include:

  • Pain or swelling of the face, jaw, and neck
  • Lock jaw or limited mobility of the jaw
  • Popping and clicking sounds when you open or close your jaw
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Earaches or ringing in the ears
  • Toothaches and difficulty chewing

How Is Bruxism Related to TMJ?

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can be the cause of your jaw pain. While TMJ disorder and bruxism are different conditions, bruxism can be at the root of your TMD. This is because grinding your teeth can create a great deal of stress on the jaw joint. Conversely, bruxism can wear down the teeth, resulting in a misalignment of the bite, which can result in TMJ. As bruxism typically occurs at night, the recommended treatment is a night guard. This customized appliance fits comfortably in the mouth and prevents the teeth from coming into contact.

Can Occlusal Adjustment Alleviate TMJ?

An occlusal adjustment may be performed to correct a misalignment of the bite. When you receive a new crown or filling, for example, it may rise up farther than your other teeth, stopping your teeth from resting comfortably together. Our doctors can detect the undesirable point of contact and make adjustments so that your bite feels “right” again. This treatment can be effective in the treatment of TMD.
